Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO)’s Self-Help Homeownership program provides families and individuals in Buncombe County with low or moderate income an opportunity to achieve the American Dream of homeownership. Our Self-Help program brings together a group of four to six qualifying families who work together to build their homes under the guidance of an MHO construction supervisor. In addition to low-interest USDA mortgages, the “sweat equity” construction hours put in by the homeowners reduce the cost of their homes. With the Self-Help program, neighbors work alongside one another to build community from the ground up.
